The next time you hear from me, I’ll probably be starting my year-end features for 2009… but before I do that, I felt like I had to share this remix that Big Spider’s Back sent me a couple weeks ago. His friends and fellow Seattle chillwavers Universal Studios Florida have taken Warped standout “Perfect Machine” and transformed it into a more laidback, breezy affair. Here layers of forest field recordings, guitar strums, shakers, and ethereal synth build into dense, hazy waves of sound that seem to purposefully drift along to no place in particular, subsiding and swelling as slow, rhythmic tides. Yep, a great take on an already stellar track. Props, USF. Props.
While we’re on the looping, spacier side of things, you should also check out the excellent lead single from Pantha du Prince‘s upcoming Black Noise. A hypnotic, minimal pastiche of blip arpeggios and clattering percussion, ocassionally steered by a driving rhythm section, “The Splendour” features Tyler Pope of !!! and LCD Sounsystem on bass and provides an appetite-whetting glimpse into where Hendrik Weber is headed on this next record. You can also stream that ultra hype-inducing Panda Bear guest spot on “Stick By My Side” over here.
